Text Orientation

You have three orientations to choose from: Landscape, Portrait, and Stacked. These orientations refer to how text appears on the strip. With the PowisPrint software you can change the orientations at any time while designing your strip. In Landscape and Portrait orientations, you can enter up to five lines of text. Just press ENTER when you want to create a new line. Stacked orientation allows only one line of text. If you have a lot of text, try Landscape orientation. Although you can use only one orientation per zone, you can use different orientations in different zones.

Zones

A zone designates a certain area on a strip. You can put text or an image in one, and adjust it to fit your design needs. And while the PowisPrinter keyboard offers three areas where you can print, PowisPrint software lets you use up to five. This means you can place text or images practically anywhere on the strip.

1. Bars: Along the bottom edge of the Design Window are rectangular bars ("zone bars") that designate where the zones are in your design. The default setting has three print areas, so three bars are displayed when you open the Design Window. Only one can be active at a time. The active one is designated by the white bar; inactive ones are designated by grey bars. To activate a different zone, simply place your cursor in the corresponding area on the strip or on the bar itself, and click your mouse. The one you click becomes active, and the bar directly beneath it changes from grey to white.

2. Adding:To add a new printable area, go to the Insert menu, select "Insert-Zone", then choose Left or Right. This inserts a new box to the right or left of the current active area.

3. Clearing: Clearing a box deletes all the text or the image in it. To clear the contents of an area, insert the cursor in the box you want to clear. Now go to the Edit menu, and select "Clear-Zone Contents".

4. Removing: Removing a box deletes the the printable area from the strip. You can only have up to five printable areas so it is sometimes necessary to delete one to add another. To remove one, first insert your cursor in the box you want to delete. Clear its contents, if it has any (you cannot remove a box that contains text or an image). After clearing the box, go to the Edit menu and select "Remove-Zone".

5. Resizing: You may resize a single area by placing your cursor at the box's edge. Your arrow becomes a double-ended, horizontal arrow. In this mode, click and hold the mouse button and slide the box's boundary to its new location. To resize two areas simultaneously, place your cursor in the gap between two bars. Your arrow becomes a little hand. Click the mouse button and hold it down, while sliding to the left or the right. This resizes the two areas simultaneously, maintaining the gap between them.

6. How Styles Work: The style choices you make affect the entire contents of the active area. For example, if you enter text, then press the "Bold" style button, all text in the area becomes bold. Or if you're in a area, and press the Landscape orientation, everything in the selected box orients in Landscape. You have many formatting options, but you can use only one of each per zone-i.e., each area may contain only one font, at one point size, in one style, in one orientation, at one alignment setting. So while you can't have a single printable area with two styles, you can use two zones to create a similar effect. You can also type text in different styles in any drawing program, save it as a monochromatic bitmap image, and then insert it on your strip.

Instead, create your pages with file names that do not include a question mark, immediately publish them as is with no content, then go back to the same page and (if you want) write a HEADLINE that does include a question mark.

1) It is FREE.
2) You can use over a dozen free templates to construct your web site within MINUTES.
3) The web editor interface does not allow you to do too many things but it is very simple to use and the Header choices provided will satisfy a majority of web users.
4) It is very easy to UPDATE, EDIT and PUBLISH your existing pages.
And here are the NOT SO GREAT aspects of Google Pages:
1) You cannot mess around with the source code. Google has locked it out. Therefore you cannot insert any Javascript, or you cannot have a numerator, etc.
2) For the same reason, you cannot use Google pages for e-commerce either.
3) You have to start off with a domain name that is always a subset of the googlepages.com, as in "mysite.googlepages.com". However, you can POINT your own domain name to this site.
If you need a relatively static website on a FREE and well-maintained server with a FREE and very easy to use foolproof editor, then you should check out what Google has to offer.
I have a feeling Google will not stop with this basic version and will continue to add new features as we go along. It's worth keeping an eye on this new experiment from Google.

There are many types of digital photo printers available that are made especially for printing photographs. They come in many sizes; many of them are small enough to be carried along with your camera so that you can print photos whenever you need them. Several of these, which include portable printers, connect to your digital camera. This means a computer is no longer needed to print photographs. Some have special slots for a digital media cards. This means you can just detach the card from your camera and attach it directly into the printer. With these printers, you get photos immediately. However these come at a cost. More expensive than normal inkjet printers, they begin at $150 and go up to $300 to $500. At the higher end are the professional ones.
The more expensive are essentially inkjet printers, with six color cartridges. A few use the thermal dye or dye sublimation technology, which melts ink "crayons" onto the pages. While they provide high quality, they are only good for photo printing. Today, color lasers are also used, though they are not as popular. The desktop color lasers are not as good, though they have improved. They are cheaper, and it is possible to get monochrome lasers. Dell offers monochrome Printer 1100; it is also below $100. Scanners available for photographers have add-ons that that allow scanning of film and negatives.
There are few ways you can get more out of your photo printer. Fine-tune to the highest resolution when you want to print the pictures. You can improve upon the picture that has been taken; if you are taking a test print, decrease image size and load the printer with plain, $2-a-ream paper. The Internet gives us a two-way portal to the world. Unfortunately, most of us only use the Internet in one direction (i.e. receiving information). Many people never take advantage of the full potential the Internet gives - some don't even know what they are missing. Yet, we can never maximize the usefulness of the Internet until we take advantage of both sides of the spectrum and join the vast network of people who supply information as well.

Creating a website is an easy and inexpensive way to tell the world what is important to you. You might be surprised how many people will be interested in your opinions, job, family, or maybe even your recent backyard barbeque.

When I first began creating web pages, I created a website for our family (www.naudusfamily.com). It started out as a simple site to just tell what our family has been doing recently. None of us expected anything from it. I was so surprised when hundreds of visitors flocked to our site and our friends sent us emails telling us how much they enjoyed and appreciated it. Even such a simple site has been so rewarding.

In this course, we will discover how you can easily create your own site at little or no expense. Some very useful programs exist that make web development a simple task. No skill is needed. Experience is not required. Learning HTML is unnecessary. Simply point, click, drag and drop, let the program write all the HTML for you, and you're on the road to creating a great site!

Let's Start From the Very Beginning...

A very important first step is to decide what your site is going to be about. Who is your audience going to be? Is your website for everybody, or for specific people? What are they interested in? Be specific. Write it down. Once you are able to formulate your thoughts clearly on paper, you are ready to proceed onto the next step.

Next, think about specific pages you want on your site. Write down everything you think of. Finally, take everything you have written and organize it into a site map. Making a site map will help you visually plan the navigation of your site. Avoid putting too many links on the home page. If the number of links exceeds 10, group them under several broad links. For example, if your site is about music, instead of having links for Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, etc. on the home page, you would have one link named "composers."

Remember, taking some time to plan before you begin can save you a lot of trouble in the future. Planning will also give your site a feeling of continuity, visitors can easily find what they are looking for, and as a result they will want to come back.

Web Page Editors

A web page editor (sometimes referred to as a "web editor" or simply "editor") is an invaluable tool that will assist you in making web pages. Requiring no knowledge of HTML, some editors have a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) interface in which all you need to do is drag and drop items, and it writes all the HTML for you. However, some people think that to be really good at web development you need to be able to code in straight HTML. Furthermore, they declare that using a web page editor is "cheating." But the very opposite is true. By using an editor you can design impressive web pages without even knowing HTML.

I have looked on the Internet for a web page editor that is free, easy to use, requires no knowledge of HTML, and is full-featured. While free editors have been made, many are of poor quality. One editor I found had nothing more than "stone aged" features - except for the ad it places at the bottom of each page telling your visitors that they can make their pages look just as bad for free.

By far, the best editor I found is "Selida." You can download it at http://www.amaryllis.8m.com and click "download."

Note: Selida is a rather large file. If you have a dial-up connection, it can take over an hour to download. With an effective program I found called "Download Accelerator," I was able to download it in 15 minutes. Check it out at www.speedbit.com.

Selida has a WYSIGYG, so you don't need to know HTML to use it. The WYSIWYG is called "Design Mode." For your convenience, most of Selida's features are accessible from the "Insert" menu. For example, if you want an image on your page, you would simply click in your document where you want the image to go, and select "Image" from the menu. Reducing the complex process of web development to a simple point-and-click, Selida can help cut out a lot of the time needed to make your web pages.

Selida also comes with some very useful templates. If you find a template you like, simply edit it, save it, and you've finished a web page. It's that easy! (No, it's not cheating.)

I strongly encourage you to start developing your own website. Even if you don't think you have the skill, you might be surprised how easy, fun, and rewarding it can be. When I started working on our family website (www.naudusfamily.com), I simply wanted to learn and enjoy web development. But once I launched it, I found that it was a lot more than just fun. It has been very useful and rewarding. One of the best things about web development is that it's free - if you decide you don't like it, (which I hope won't occur) you're not obligated to keep going because you bought an expensive editor and paid for a year's hosting service. You can even get web hosting for free!

Remember the days before email and the Internet? While you didn't have to worry about spam, think of all you were missing out on, that you now have access to because of this global networking capability. Remember how your friends told you about email and surfing the web and how cool it is, and how they encouraged you to get hooked up. Remember how glad you were when you finally made the leap and tackled getting online. Once you were set up, remember how you thought, "That wasn't all that hard after all." Yes, it required learning a few little maneuvers in order to handle basic tasks, but once you had those simple things down, everything was a snap. Remember how amazed you were at the utility of the web and of email, and of all the wonderful things you could find at the click of a button. Think now of the withdrawals you have when you are taken away from the web for a period of time, and how much you miss it because of how much it brings to you. We wouldn't want to use the word "addicting" because of its bad connotations, but perhaps a more romantic word would be "hooked." Your life would never be the same without the Internet.

What we would like to suggest is that there is a similar quantum boon to be had with the wiki technology that enables anyone who visits a wiki site to edit the content on the site and to add content as they see fit.

Same thing applies.

At first, it is new to you, and therefore perhaps intimidating. You're going to have to learn a few of the basic tricks. But once you take the first few steps your going to be amazed, thinking, "That wasn't all that hard after all." Then you are going to realize how marvelous the wiki can be, how it enables you to not only visit websites, but to actually participate in the CREATION of fabulous content. You have an outlet. It's like a discussion board, except that now your comment is integrated in context into a breathing, evolving document that is eventually viewed by hundreds if not tens of thousands of people. You have helped create something in a team spirit, making the world a better place. You have emotional ownership in the world you have helped to create. You will be hooked.

That is the power of the wiki.

We might say there are two kinds of people in the world. Talkers --'if only they would...' -- and doers -- done. Wiki brings out the doer in people. There, it's done.

See an error on a page you are visiting? Correct it in a matter of seconds. See something that is left out? Add it. Know of a great resource that should be mentioned? Create a link to it. Find a broken link? Fix it, or note that it needs to be fixed, so someone can do it. Know of a better way to say something you read? Reword it.

You think a page is too long and should be subdivided? Subdivide it.

See some content that has no business on the site? Remove it. Know of an image that would be great for a page? Post it. See some spam? Delete it. You want to build your own links page? Build it; and make it your home page. Think the layout of a page could be better? Fix it. See some content that really belongs on a different page? Move it. You want to comment on a page? Post a comment in the "discussion" page associated with it {each page has one}.

You don't even have to be logged in. Just hit the "edit" button to the right of the beginning of the relevant section, and make the change you think should be made. Enter a little memo of what you are doing in the "Summary" box at the bottom; then preview the page; and if it look right, then save it. Your improvement has now gone live. You have just made a difference. That feels good. That wasn't too hard was it? The world is a little better because of what you just did.

The Left Click The left click is your primary tool for making selections; following hyperlinks; and opening folders, documents or programs. It is the click option that comes most naturally since right-handed people use the pointer finger on their right hand to perform it. In fact, if someone tells you to "click" or "double click" you can usually assume they mean "left click." The greatest challenge comes in knowing what to click and how many times. Here are some of the most common stumpers:

Radio buttons: Think of these as toggle switches where you can only choose one option-like male or female. You can turn your "mark" on or off with a single click of the left mouse button. If you accidentally click twice, you'll make your mark and erase it too, so left click only once on a radio button.

Check boxes: When you are presented with check boxes, you can click them in any combination. For example, when you order your pizza, be sure to click pepperoni and sausage and peppers!

Hyperlinks: These may appear as URLs, images, buttons, headlines or text phrases in web pages, emails and documents. Usually hyperlink text appears underlined, however not all underlined text is a hyperlink, and not all hyperlinks are underlined. So, to confirm if something is a hyperlink, roll your mouse arrow over the top of the image or text and see if it turns into the image of a hand holding up its pointer finger. If the two clicks are separated by too much time, then your second click may activate an editing mode of your selection's name. You'll recognize this mode when a black box appears around the text and your cursor is flashing inside. You can deactivate this mode by clicking away from the highlighted area onto another file or folder or onto most any blank area of your screen.

The Right Click The right click is less commonly used, but is extremely helpful when you want to know "what are my options here?" From wherever you are, clicking the right mouse button should give you a pop-up list of currently active functions. If you want to make exported raster images take on the same appearance, how do you manage it? The answer is to plot it in the same way.

In the Plot dialog box, click the Printer/Plotter Name droplist, and then notice the entry named "Add-A-Plotter Wizard." This guides you through the steps in setting up specific printer configuration.

There are two types of printers available with the wizard, virtual printers and physical ones. The virtual printers are what you need, because they are capable of exporting drawings as raster files in any of the following formats: JPEG, TIFF, PNG, BMP, GIF, MNG, ICOCUR, TGA, PCX, WBMP, JP2, JPC, PGX, RAS, PNM, and SKA.

Some of the more commonly-used formats include the following:

Narrow down your choices for design companies you need to select a group that will complete your project on time and within budget. Start by looking at the designers portfolio. Established design companies have a comprehensive portfolio of work on their website. Thoroughly review the portfolio for samples that have the same features youre interested in (design style is important, but a good designer should be able to create a variety of looks). Clue #1: If youre looking to hire a designer and they dont have a website RUN! These days there is NO excuse not to have an online presence for your advertising and marketing company.

Clue #2: If all or most of the samples on a web designers site say Coming Soon or Page not found RUN! Obviously theyre probably a company that doesnt finish projects.

Clue #3: If their portfolio has many samples, but theyre all for the same campaign or company (and one youve never heard of) RUN!! Most likely these are samples done for design school, not real world business.

Clue #4: If their website or work samples have typos, broken links and outdated information RUN! If theyve done it before, theyll do it again.

Clue #5: If youre interviewing a designer and they dont ask the three key questions RUN! Your designer has to have these questions answered: what does the client do, what does the client want done, and what is the project deadline.

Clue #6: If you have trouble getting the design company on the phone, or theyre not answering your emails in a timely and efficient manner RUN! This is just a foreshadowing of whats to come when the real work begins.

Clue #7: If you dont get a price quote (and or printing estimate) in writing RUN! Verbal estimates are amateur, indicating that that designer is as well.

Clue #8: If the price sounds too good to be true RUN! It probably is too good to be true. Youll either never get the final project completed, or youll get what you pay for. Get several quotes to see what the ballpark figures should be if youre new at this. And dont rely on internet companies as many are in foreign countries making communication impossible, and again youll get what you pay for.

Clue #9: If you arent asked to sign a contract RUN! Do you know what the payment terms are, who owns the copyright, are there royalties or usage limits, and so on. Dont hire any contractor without some agreement in writing.

Clue #10: If you arent asked for money up front RUN! Think of it as a retainer, and typically, an assurance that your job is taken as a serious priority. If youve gotten to this point with your research, a deposit of 30 or 50% shouldnt scare you.

After looking at samples, check references. Get a minimum of three and ask these questions:

Were deadlines met?
Was the company flexible?
Did they make suggestions?
What were their strengths?
What were their weaknesses?
Would you hire them again?

There are tons of reputable, talented, and yes, affordable creative service companies around. The care you take at the beginning should pay big when you receive a finished project thats what you expected (or better), thats within budget, thats on time, and most importantly, thats effective at meeting your marketing goals.

Step 4: Getting Started

Your selected website design team will interview you to understand your business, your goals for the site and your budget. They should prepare a project plan with pricing which lays out each step of the project, who is responsible for what, deadlines, included features, pricing, and extras with their costs. A contract is a must! Make sure your contract lists who owns what, the terms, the deadlines, and the method of approving additional charges.

Armed with good information, a well-thought out plan and scope, and answers to some questions up front, your website development should be smooth and painless from start-to-finish.

If a particular image is perfect for a particular segment, but the color is not matching, you can use the eye dropper tool to select the color of the original picture and recolor the small piece accordingly. The French word “Giclee” was invented to name the process of fine arts on Iris printers, done through an ink jet printing method from a digital source. This word was mainly taken from the French word “le gicleur” which means “nozzle”. To be more specific the word “glicer” means “to spurt” or “spray” through a nozzle. The word giclee was started by a print maker Jack Duganne in 1991. He was a print maker and used to work in a field for representing any kind of ink jet print which is used as fine arts. Giclee prints are often used in print shops and in galleries.

Origin of giclee prints:

Before the use of giclee printing, the methods of ink jet technology were used as an alternative option to serigraphy and lithography. Afterward, the word giclee was invented to describe the methods of digital prints used as fine arts. It was first created on the Iris graphics in the early 1990s with the help of continuous ink jet printers. Iris printers were initially used for producing the prepress proofs from the digital files for the job of colour matching. Here are 5 ways to save and protect your hard drive and ensure it can keep working when you switch to a new drive.
1. Backup Your Data
You've heard it many times before - the best way to protect hard drive data is to backup your data. There are many ways to backup your data. Copying personal files to another disk is one method, but it's time-consuming and manual. It's better to use an automated backup solution that can perform backups at scheduled intervals.
One such product is bundled with Windows XP Home and Professional editions. The file is called ntbackup.exe. It's automatically installed with Windows XP Pro. If you have Windows XP Home edition, you can locate the file in your Windows CD ROM in the valueaddmsftntbackup folder.
Then run ntbackup.msi to run the backup program. The backup program will backup your files to a backup file. Once you've made your backup, you need to know how to restore your files from your backup. You may need to reinstall Windows so keep your original installation discs handy.
If you want to avoid reinstalling Windows then consider making an image of your hard drive. Backup programs can make an image of your whole disk without the need to reinstall Windows.
2. Password Protection
Password protection and data encryption are one of the most basic ways that users can protect hard drive contents. To change your password in Windows just access your account from Control Panel -> User Accounts and then click change my password.
Now you want to encrypt your data, which will scramble it for everyone but you. Please note that encryption is available in Windows XP, but only for NTFS file systems. To encrypt a file or folder, right-click on it, go to Properties -> Advanced tab and check the box labeled Encrypt contents to secure.
No one else will be able to read this data but you. You can make encryption easier by creating a popup menu. Go into the Registry Editor and locate
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows CurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced.
Select Edit -> New -> DWORD Value and name it EncryptionContextMenu.
Double-click this and enter 1 for the value. From this point on, you will be able to right-click any file or folder to bring up a popup menu with the options Encrypt or Decrypt.
3. Unleash the Windows Recovery Console
Imagine having your hard drive crash and not being able to boot up. Are you out of out luck? Not at all! Bundled with Windows XP is a powerful tool called the Windows Recovery Console. It allows you to repair file systems or folders so you can protect hard drive contents. Unfortunately by default the WRC is on a "leash"-it operates in a restricted or crippled mode on your computer. .
Lift the restrictions by opening the Local Security Settings editor in Windows (click Start -> Run -> secpol.msc). Go to Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options and double-click on Recovery Console: Allow floppy copy and access to all drives and all folders. Check Enabled and Ok. That will set up you for full access. Should Windows ever crash, start the WRC and type set AllowAllPaths=True.
Start the WRC by putting your Windows XP CD into your computer and pressing 'R' upon reboot. Type your Administrator password. The command interpreter will appear. You can then run whatever commands you need or type help for a list of commands.
4. Make Room for Defrag
One way to save hard drive contents is to fine tune your defrag program. With defrag there are two files that will never defrag: your Master File Table and your swap file.
As the table of contents for your hard drive your Master File Table expands as you add more files. To protect hard drive MFTs you must allocate more space to them. Go into your Registry and locate the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFilesystem. Find the value NtfsMftZoneReservation and type 2, 3 or 4. These numbers indicate how much of the hard drive to allocate to the MFT: 25, 37.5 and 50 percent respectively.
To expand your swap file make sure you have 256MB of RAM and click on the System icon. Go to Advanced -> Performance Settings -> Advanced and click Change. Select the No Paging File in Virtual Memory box and click OK three times. Reboot and run disk defrag. Then go back to Virtual Memory box, select Custom and set the Initial Size and Maximum Size to the same value (2 to 4 times your RAM) and your swap file will not fragment.
5. Get Rid of Old Junk
The final way to save hard drive units is to get rid of that old junk in your computer. These are unused programs on your computer that tend to slow down your computer's operations. Uninstall them by going to Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs.
Also you should invest in a good anti-spyware program as well. Spyware ads are those annoying popups that try to direct you to a merchant's site. These programs reside on your computer and consume precious resources-until you remove them with a spyware or adware busting program.
Another area on your computer that you should definitely check out is your Temp folder. This is the folder where Windows dumps files that it is only using on an interim basis. If these files are left over after they have been used they can slow your computer down as well. You'll find the Temp folder in C:Documents and Settings under your username. You can sort the files by their modified dates to determine which files you think are way too old and are safe to delete.
